Chicago Filmmakers is proud to host the world premier of When Billy Broke His Head? and Other Tales of Wonder (1994, 56 min), an irreverent look at disability issues by Billy Golfus and Chicago artist David E. Simpson. Golfus, who lives in Minneapolis, was an award winning journalist who suffered a severe head injury in a motor scooter accident almost ten years ago. When Billy Broke His Head... documents Golfus' frustrations and insights as he tries to make a new life for himself. When he goes on the road, he discovers the common experiences of discrimination in the lives of many people with disabilities. He witnesses first hand the strength and anger that is forgiving a new civil rights movement for disability not just as a medical fact - but as a political status. Definitely a documentary with an attitude, Simpson and Golfus' collaboration blends humor with radical politics individual experience with a chorus of voices all the while refusing to tell the "inspirational stories" we have come to expect from films about people with disabilities.
