Video maker Julie Zando, who recently received on of the American film Institute?s prestigious Maya Deren Awards, has become known for exploring difficult subjects ? female masochisms, erotic obsession and victimization.

Her last piece, Uh!Oh! (1993, 38 min) combines a contemporary love story with an idiosyncratic retelling of the classic novel the Story of O. Not an adaptation, but a critical exploration of the psychology of submission, Uh!Oh! Employs an all female cast that plays cowboys who stage sadomasochistic rituals in the basement of a diner. Sadomasochism is a deeply polarized issue and this frank video resists to embrace either the ?radical sex? nor the ?anti S/M? position. Also screening will be Hey Bud (1987, 10 min) and Let?s Play Prisoners (1988, 22 min) a haunting look at the hidden issues of erotic power relationships between women told through the reconstructed story of girlhood friends. Zando, who has recently relocated to Chicago, will be present for the screening.
