Chicago Filmmakers and Women in the Director?s Chair are pleased to present this special program honoring New Day films with screenings of an important classic from their collection and a local premiere of a new film.

Founded in 1971, New Day is a pioneering distribution cooperative of independent produces who are committed to making the finest socially and politically engaged works. Union Maids (1976, 48 min., 16mm) is an inspiring documentary that chronicles the birth of the CIO in the 1930?s as seen through the eyes of three remarkable Chicago Women. This Landmark period in union history is brought to life through; interviews, rare historical footage, and the labor music of the 1930?s and 40?s. Means of Grace (1995, 57 min., 16mm) is a personal and moving documentary portrait of the director?s mother, who was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in the 1960?s. Clements uses excerpts form her mother?s diaries and short stories to provide a vivid look at the progression of her disease and the impact it had on her and her family. Jim Klein or Julia Reichart will attend the screening.
