The 1926 silent film masterpiece, FAUST, by German expressionist filmmaker, F. W. Murnau, will be projected on The Blue Nocturne stage, accompanied by a live and improvised music score by these three veteran heavyweights of Chicago and the worlds' music scene - Robert Irving III (Miles Davis music director and arranger), Paul Von Mertens (Brian Wilson music director and arranger) and Chicago legend Nicholas Tremulis (Songwriter, arranger, music director).

Robert Irving III is part of a distinguished lineage of post-bop pianists who collaborated with the legendary Miles Davis: Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea and Joe Zawinul. Irving, who worked as Davis' pianist/keyboardist/musical director and producer from 1979 until 1988, proved to be Davis' longest collaborator. Irving has produced five Grammy award nominated projects and three film scores including Street Smart (the first film of Morgan Freeman), while working with the likes of Wayne Shorter, Terri Lyne Carrington, Carlos Santana, Grover Washington Jr, Dr. Donald Byrd, Diane Reeves, David Murray, Regina Carter, Gary Bartz, Pharaoh Sanders, John Scofield, Kirk Whalum, Branford Marsalis and countless others.

 

Robert Irving III currently tours the world as Musical Director of Miles Electric Band, which consists of
alums of the 1970-1980s Miles Davis groups and also with the group Pocket Science featuring Kahil El
Zabar, Gary Bartz and Jamaaladeen Tacuma who are alums of Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and Ornette
Coleman respectively.



Paul Von Mertens is a Chicago-based composer/arranger and a performer on saxophone, flute, clarinet and harmonica. He has played and recorded with a variety of artists including Mavis Staples, Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Elton John, Stereolab, The Sea and Cake, Poi Dog Pondering, Broken Social Scene, Wilco, and Mono. He has been a member of the Brian Wilson Band since 1999 and is currently musical director.


Paul has written arrangements, orchestrations and performed for Brian Wilson's tour and Grammy-winning recording of "Smile," the Pet Sounds Tour, "Live In London," "Gettin' In Over My Head," "That Lucky Old Sun," "Wilson Reimagines Gershwin," "In The Key Of Disney," and "That's Why God Made the Radio" with Brian and The Beach Boys.

Writing credits include the Peabody Award-winning documentary "The Lost Children of Rockdale County" and "Merchants of Cool" for Frontline,

 


Nicholas Tremulis and his group the Nicholas Tremulis Orchestra or NTO as they're known affectionately in the Chicagoland area, has recorded over 8 albums starting in 1986 on Island Records and has played and recorded with a trainload of legendary artists, such as Keith Richards,  Billy Corgan, David Amran, Marianne Faithful, Richard Hell, Kurt Elling, Ian Hunter, David Johansen, Maceo Parker, Ronnie Spector, Jim Lauderdale, Hubert Sumlin, Mavis Staples, Ivan Neville, Rick Danko, Sir Mac Rice, Willie Nile and Wilco.

 

Nick is also in three side projects: Candy Golde, with Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame inductee, Bun E. Carlos,(Cheap Trick) John Stirratt, (Wilco) and Rick Rizzo (11th Deam Day).The Fauntleroys with Alejandro Escovedo, Ivan Julian (Richard Hell, Mathew Sweet) and Linda Pitmon and the Chi-Town Social Club with Darryl Jones (Rolling Stones) Vince Wiburn Jr. (Miles Davis) and Shawn Christopher (Chaka Kahn). A sought after film composer of over 40 films, Nick won an Emmy for his scoring work for a 2015 documentary on Italian architect, Carlo Bontempi.
