The Guild Complex is proud to present poet and author Nikki Giovanni, in collaboration with Columbia College's Dance Africa Chicago 2001. To many she personifies the Black Arts Movement of the 1960's. Her name is equally synonymous with poetry. She is the author of ten books of poetry, six children's poetry books, and eight collections of spoken word recordings. Her words have also been captured through a collection of essays and conversations on a myriad of subjects. Her awards and honors are countless, including the keys to several dozen cities, The Langston Hughes Award, and National Literary Hall of Fame for Writers of African Descent. She is the recipient of honorary degrees from over a dozen colleges and universities throughout the country.
Urban Credo is a youth performance company formed in 1997 through Columbia College Chicago. They have emerged as a vital year-round performance company that explores traditional dance from Africa and the African Diaspora and contemporary dance expression such as Hip Hop and the martial art Capoeira.
Kim Ransom is a Chicago native and graduate of Bradley University. She has read her work at venues such as Northwestern University, DuSable Museum, House of Blues Chicago, and Wordstock in Brooklyn, NY. Her first book of poems, The Black House, has recieved acclaim from fans of poetry, as well as fellow writers. Nikki Giovanni had this to say about The Black House: "THe Black House brings a lot of light to the feelings and emotions of young people."
